About Shahar Choir

The “Shachar” choir was founded in 1994 by Gila Brill, the choir’s conductor and musical director to this day.

“Shachar” accepts young singers, mostly between the ages of 18 and 35. Singers who have continued to sing in it have expanded their training in singing and music as part of their activities in the choir, and thus the clear and fresh sound characteristic of “Shachar” was created. The choir operates in Rehovot, but singers from all over the central region also come to it. Among the choir’s past singers are some who have gone on to musical careers in Israel and abroad.

Last year, Shahar performed under the direction of Gila Brill at the Abu Ghosh Festival with Fora’s Requiem and other works to mark the two-year anniversary of the 7th of October, with the Barrocade Orchestra in a concert of baroque works, and more.

“Shachar” also frequently collaborates with other professional musical entities. This year, “Shachar” participated in a performance with the Tel Aviv Solo Ensemble to perform Mozart’s Coronation Mass, and joined the Israeli Bertini Choir to perform Mendelssohn’s oratorio “Elijah”, with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

The choir’s repertoire is wide and varied, but “Shachar” singers especially like to perform music from the Baroque period, which is suitable for light voices and requires a good familiarity with the style. The choir also enjoys performing modern, artistic and popular music.

The Shahar Choir operates through the municipal company, Rehovot, and is supported by the Rehovot Municipality and the Cultural Administration in the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
